For 10 years, the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association (GAPFA) sought ways to expand its operations and produce enough chicken and turkey feed to meet the growing demands of its over 1,500 members and other poultry farmers across the country.
The inadequate number of tractor service providers in northern Ghana makes ploughing expensive, limiting farmers’ ability to cultivate more land. In the 2022 production season, for instance, the average cost of ploughing an acre of land was approximately $26.46 making it difficult for smallholder farmers to afford these services.

Braimah Shaibu looked around his rural community of Nasia and saw two things: a struggling cottage industry of rice producers, and young women fleeing the poverty-stricken area to find menial jobs in Ghana’s urban centres. As a former micro credit officer with a local non-governmental organization, Shaibu wanted a different view.
